THE TEMPEST ACT I Words Meanings

 ACT  I SCENE 1 & 2

Boatswain = An officer on a merchant ship

Master = The captain of the ship

Mariners = Sailors

Bestir = Be quick about it

Yarely = Promptly; Briskly

 Heigh = This word is used as a form of encouragement, so here it means ‘buck up’

My hearts = my brave fellows (sailors)

Yare, yare = quick , quick

Take in = lower

Tend to = attend to

Play the men = don’t be womanish , behave like a men

Keep below = stay in your cabins

Mar = spoil

These roarers = storm and thunder which are making a loud noise

Councilor = one accustomed to give order

Elements = storm , thunder and wind (the four elements are earth, water,  air, and fire)

Hand = handle

Mischance of hour = death which is imminent

Hap = happen

Cheerly = hopefully

Good hearts = brave fellows

Methinks = I think; it seems to me

Drowning mark = the sign that he will embrace death by drowning

Complexion = his external appearance and natural colour of skin

Gallows = device for hanging a person

His…….gallows = his outward appearance shows that he is clearly born to be hanged

Destiny = fate

Cable = rope or chain of anchor

Doth little advantage = is of little use

Yare = be ready

A plague……howling = this oath was used by a man in a mood of irritation ,anger , annoyance

Our office = sailors on duty

Have you a mind = do you desire

A pox…..throat = here is another form of oath . pox means syphilis which is dreadful venereal disease

Bawling = howling, noisy

Blasphemous = talking impiously; talking irreverently or abusively about sacred things

Incharitable = cruel; heartless

Cur = a dog of some inferior breed

Whoreson = son of prostitute

Insolent = rude

Warrant = guarantee

Lay her a hold = to bring the ship close to the wind,so as to hold or keep to it

Lay her off- direct the course of the ship away from the shore

All lost- all our efforts proved failure

To prayers- to pray  God

Assist them- join with them in prayers

 

Merely- completely

Wide-chopped- wide-mouthed

Rascal- the roue boatswain

Washing of ten tides- may the Boatswain remain lie in a drowning state during the ebb and flow

Swear against it- threaten to snatch and drag him into the sea waters.
