ISC TEMPEST ACT II SCENE II QUESTIONS WITH ANSWER

CALIBAN The spirit torments me. Oh!
STEPHANO This is some monster of the isle with four legs who hath got, as I take it, an ague. Where the devil should he learn our language? I will give him some relief if it be but for that. If I can recover him and keep him tame and get to Naples with him, he’s a present for any emperor that ever trod on neat’s leather.

 Q. 1 What does Caliban think when Trinculo creeps into his cloak? What does Stephano suppose to see the strange creature?
Ans. When Trinculo creeps into Caliban’s cloak, Caliban thinks that the spirit is there to torment him. Stephano in a drunken state as he is, sees four legs, popping out from the prostrate figure and supposes that it must be some monster of the isle with four legs.

 Q. 2 What does Stephano think when he finds the monster (Caliban) trembling? What does he hope to do?
Ans. When Stephano finds the monster trembling, he ( Stephano) thinks that this monster is suffering from a fever which shakes his body. Like Trinculo he too hopes that if he can cure him with the drink, he may take him to England and make money out of him.

 Q. 3 What does Caliban again request Trinculo knowing him Prospero’s spirit and what does he assume?
Ans. Speaking again to Trinculo whom Caliban thinks to be one of Prospero’s sprits tormenting him, Caliban requests him not to torment him and ensures him that he will bring fuel wood to Prospero’s cell with greater speed in future.

 Q. 4 What does Stephano do after hearing two voices ? How do Trinculo and Staphano feel to see each other?
Ans. Stephano not only sees four legs but hears now two voices and pours some more wine into the other mouth, i.e. the mouth of Trinculo. When Trinculo and Stephano see each other, they feel very happy and each relates to the other the manner of his escape from the ship-wreck.

Q. 5 How does Caliban behave after drinking wine?
Ans. When the wine goes to Caliban’s head, he feels so elated by wine that he begins to think Stephano, who had poured the wine into his mouth, to be some deity who has descended from heaven.

STEPHANO Out o' th' moon, I do assure thee. I was the man i' the moon when time was. CALIBAN I have seen thee in her and I do adore thee. My mistress showed me thee and thy dog and thy bush.
STEPHANO Come, swear to that, kiss the book. I will furnish it anon with new contents, swear. CALIBAN drinks
TRINCULO By this good light, this is a very shallow monster. I afeard of him! A very weak monster. The man i' th' moon! A most poor credulous monster! — Well drawn, monster, in good sooth!

Q. 1 What has Stephano hidden the barrel of wine? What does Stephano say when asked by Caliban if he has dropped from the sky?
Ans. Stephano has got a whole barrel full of wine and he had hidden it in a rock by the sea side. That place in the rock in his wine celler. When Caliban asks Stephano if he has dropped from the sky above. Stephano assures him that he has dropped from the moon in the sky and he was the man in the moon whom the people used to see.

Q. 2 What does Caliban say when he comes to know that Stephano was the man in the moon? Who is mistress? What did she show Caliban?
Ans. When Caliban comes to know that Stephano lived in the moon, he shows great respect for him and says that he is his worshipper. Caliban’s mistress is Prospero’s daughter, Mirand. His mistress pointed Stephano out to him when he was there in t he moon. She also showed him his ( Stephano’s) dog and the bush growing by his side.

 Q. 3 When will Stephano fill the bottle of wine again?
Ans. If Caliban takes an oath by kissing the bottle of wine which is known as holy for them as is the Bible and repeats whatever Caliban has said, Stephano will then soon fill the empty bottle of wine with more wine from his cellar in the rock.

 Q. 4 What does Trinculo say about Caliban’s intelligence?
Ans. Trinculo says that Caliban is devoid of intelligence. He is a very weak-minded monster. He really thinks that Stephano was the man in the moon. He is a most stupid monster who believes everything he is told. Trinculo thinks that Caliban is talking under great impact of wine.

Q. 5 What promises does Caliban make to Stephano ? What does he request Stephano?
Ans. Caliban promises Stephano that he will show him every inch of the fertile land on this island and he will kiss his foot in token of his worship of him. Caliban requests him to become his god so that he may worship him.
