Trinculo: Here’s neither bush nor shrub to bear off
any weather at all. And another storm
brewing, I hear it sing i' th' wind. Yond same black cloud, yond huge one,
looks like a foul bombard that would shed his liquor. If it should thunder as
it did before, I know not where to hide my head. Yond same cloud cannot choose
but fall by pailfuls. – What have we here / a man or a fish? Dead or alive? A
fish: he smells like a fish; a very ancient and fish like smell;
Q. 1 In
the earlier lines, what complaint does Caliban make against those spirits which
are set upon him to torment him?
Ans.
Caliban complains that for a trifling offence, the different kinds of spirits
are set upon him with urchin shows, throw him in the mine, or lead him away
from his path like a will – O’ the wisp; sometimes they make mouths at him like
monkeys and bite him or lie rolling in his way like hedge-hogs, all their
bristles erect or entwise him like snakes and his him into madness.

is Trinculo? How has he wandered there? Why is he looking for a bush or shrub?
Ans.
Trinculo is the inferior member of King Alonso’ s party. He is jester by
profession. He has got separated from Alonso and lords and even from his
companion Stephano. He is looking for a bush or shrub so that he might be able
to protect himself against inclement weather.

Why does Trinculo’s appearing there frighten Caliban and what does Caliban
think of him?
Ans.
Trinculo’s appearing there frighten Caliban because he does not know this
stranger and he has never before seen any human being on this island with the
exception of Prospero and Miranda. He thinks that Trinculo is one of Prospero’s
mischievous spirits and has been sent here by Prospero to torment him.
Q. 4 Why
does Caliban lie down flat on the ground ? Where did Trinculo hide to save
himself from the rain and storm?
Ans.
Caliban lies down flat on the ground because he thinks that the spirit maya not
notice him in this posture. Trinculo did not find any place to hide and save
himself from the impending storm, so he hid himself under Caliban’s cloak to
save himself from rain and storm.
Q. 5 How does Trinculo react on seeing Caliban
luing flat on the ground? How does he take Caliban ? How does Trinculo want to
make his fortune?
Ans. Trinculo is greatly surprised to see
Caliban lying flat on the ground. He takes Caliban to be a kind of fish and
from the stink that comes out of his body, he takes it to be foul and rotten,
fish, salted and dried. Trinculo thinks that if he could take the creature to
England, where had once been; and make an exhibition of Caliban, he would
certainly make a great fortune.
