TEMPEST ACT I SCENE II

 Allay - set them to rest

Stinking - foul smelling

Welkin's cheek = sky's surface

Brave vessel - a fine ship

Dashed - reduced to piece

Dashed..... Pieces - the vessel split on rock

Perished - died by drowning

Ere - before

Swallowed - destroyed

Fraughting soul - creature who made up the freight of the vessel

Be collected - be calm

amazement - utter bewilderment

Piteous heart - pitying heart

O woe the day-O, what a woeful day it is!

Naught - nothing

Poor cell - wretched small room

Meddle with - interfere

Pluck-remove

Magic garment - the dress of magician

Direful spectacle - dreadful sight

Wreck - the destruction of the ship

Touched - moved

Very virtue of-, the most effective quality

Compassion - pity

 

Provision in mine art-by the provident care belonging to my magic

 

Perdition - injury

Hair - even the little harm

Bootless inquisition-fruitless questioning enquiry

Over topping- harbouruing excessive ambition (behaving too arrogantly)

Ivy- an evergreen climbing plant

Verdure- greenery

Worldly ends- pursuit of worldly aims

Dedicated- entirely devoted

Closeness- secrecy or privacy

Bettering of- life of seclusion

Retired- aloof

Over prized- were worth more than

False- treacherous

Awakened an evil nature- stirred un scrupulous ambition in him

Thus lorded- thus became supreme
